Kurt Vile has a way of tying time in knots. You can hear it on his new album Smoke Ring For My Halo from the get-go – the pinwheeling guitars and reaching atmospheres of ‘Baby’s Arms’ are as strange as they are familiar: a demonstration of how Kurt can put worn methods and sounds through himself and end up with something that isn’t emotionally or sonically obvious. Instead we’re left with a record that contains traces of the past but doesn’t waste precious time in the now being reverent. Once compared to Leonard Cohen, Tom Petty, Psychic TV, and Animal Collective in the same review (for 2009’s Childish Prodigy), Kurt can bring to mind anything from Suicide to Leo Kottke to My Bloody Valentine, Bob Seger, Nick Drake, and Eastern ragas. Still, he pieces together these disparate elements so seamlessly and unpretentiously that such reference points are rendered pointless by the singularity of his sound. Kurt Vile might belong to a long lineage of classic American songwriters, but he’s the only one who’s alive and in his prime today. This is the fourth time Kurt Vile has put an album’s worth of songs together and stuck a name on it, but in a sense Smoke Ring For My Halo is his first real album – every flinching guitar arpeggio and vocal wander was made to be here, made with this record in mind, to sit alongside another in situ and in sequence. It seems weird saying this given the amount of ground he’s covered already, but Smoke Ring For My Halo is the perfect way into the music Kurt Vile makes. It’s tender and evocative, elusive but companionable, tough in the gut and the arm but swollen in the chest and giddy in the head. It’s a record that is perfect for any given day during whatever season, to satisfy all moods in every possible scenario – be that first thing in the morning or last thing at night; today, tomorrow or five years from now. In short, it’s real. Kurt Vile isn’t just the loneliest of ten siblings born to parents on the outskirts of Philadelphia, the former forklift truck driver who makes rock band guitar songs in the solitude of his bedroom. Smoke Ring For My Halo brings all of that together, marrying the introspection of the nocturnal stoner with the exploration of a troubadour frontiersman to arrive at a record you know is so much more than the sum of his and its constituent parts because often he sounds like he doesn’t know how he got there himself. One small word about these shows, from head Mountain Goat John Darnielle himself!....: For years bands have been pretty judicious about playing unreleased new material, because much of it becomes available online immediately, even when the new songs are still in fairly raw form. We, too, have gotten into the bad habit of holding new stuff back. We are done with that whole philosophy, though. I miss playing stuff that's unreleased & unrecorded, stuff that still stings fresh. So we got together and decided to tour the new songs before we even record them. I don't guess that we'll be touring all ten of the new songs I've written for the next album (eleven if you count one that's presently being herded back and forth between its cell & the chopping block), but be advised that if you're the sort of person who wants as many surprises as possible when you hear a new album, you should tread lightly around recordings of these shows, because we're not going to be holding the best ones back for the album release like people tend to do now. The Mountain Goats' new album is called 'All Eternals Deck,' and if you're reading this, that means you've got some sort of copy of it. "The songs cluster around themes of hidden things and the dread that hidden things inspire," says singer/songwriter John Darnielle, "but also the excitement, the attraction, the magnetic draw that scary unknown hidden things exert." The title refers to an apocryphal tarot deck, though Darnielle explains that the album's fascination with the occult originates in having run across the word “occult” in a textbook in his nursing-student days. "’Occult’ just means ‘hidden’ or ‘not immediately obvious’ in medical terminology. There was a nursing directive to be aware of ‘occult blood.’ I thought it was the greatest thing I’d ever heard," he says. Darnielle started recording songs while during his psych-nurse days in California. "I had been writing poetry pretty much all my life," he remembers. "At some point in Norwalk I bought a guitar from this really cool old music store in a strip mall, and I started teaching myself to play." Soon Darnielle was playing live, touring with bassist Rachel Ware and then with multi-instrumentalist Peter Hughes. In 2001 they became a full-time studio-and-road-show duo, releasing four albums together: 'Tallahassee,' 'We Shall All Be Healed,' 'The Sunset Tree,' and 'Get Lonely.' Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster joined in 2007, and the collaboration clicked perfectly. "Peter and I had played with other musicians," says Darnielle, "but with Wurster we were an honest-to-God trio. We played together with real glee." The band toured the U.S., England, Australia, and New Zealand extensively, recording a new studio album called 'The Life of the World to Come' in 2009 that prompted GQ to remark: “Darnielle’s not just one of the greatest songwriters working today--he’s probably one of the greatest working writers." The album earned a 'Best New Music' nod from Pitchfork, and prompted Stephen Colbert to invite the band to make its national television debut on The Colbert Report. In 2010, the band signed to Merge Records, headquartered within walking distance of Darnielle's Durham, NC home. The band approached recording sessions for 'All Eternals Deck' as commando raids on multiple studios with a several producers: four songs at North Carolina's Fidelitorium with John Congleton; one at Q Division in Boston with longtime soundman Brandon Eggleston; four at Brooklyn's Mission Sound with Scott Solter; and four at Mana Recording Studios in Florida, with Morbid Angel guitarist and Hate Eternal helmsman Erik Rutan. "We wanted to see how disparate seasons and moods and locations and producers would play out in the songs," explains Darnielle. The result? "If you've ever watched, say, a 70s occult-scare movie where one of the scenes involves a few people visiting a storefront fortune teller, getting their cards read, and then they're trying to feel super-hopeful about their predicted outcome when what they're visibly actually feeling is dread, then you have a pretty decent idea of what this album is all about." **************************************************************************************  NATHAN SALSBURG + Rayna Gellert Friday, February 3rd @ Harvest Records $5 at the door Nathan Salsburg was born in that Diamond City, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania—she of anthracite glimmer and Babe Ruth's 1926 long ball—and is a longtime resident of Louisville, Kentucky. He is a folklorist and a producer and presenter of traditional music for East Village Radio, the Drag City imprint Twos & Fews, and the Alan Lomax Archive, among other outlets. His first solo record is called Affirmed, and it's about race horses—Affirmed, Bold Ruler, and Eight Belles, specifically—and desire and reckonings of the spirit. It's an almost entirely instrumental affair, save his elegiac rendering of the traditional tune "The False True Love." While comparisons to John Fahey may be inevitable—and there are worse curses, to be sure—the similarity that Salsburg bears to that great master is mostly one of maverick aesthetic. For where Fahey spent his career a hungry ghost in some supernal Valley of Tears—in the process paving the way for a million joyless ragas by pickers that learned the wrong lesson—Salsburg's brambly rags and sundowner hymns incorporate an arch, bittersweet harmony that marks the best work of guitarists like Reverend Gary Davis, Ry Cooder, and Nic Jones. He plays like he knows that happiness is made of sad, and every tragedy is kind of funny, in its way. I hear it took Salsburg a long time to make Affirmed, and it sounds it. Not because the picking is complicated, which it is—I suspect Nathan will eventually be recognized as among the foremost American acoustic guitarists, for anyone keeping that score—but because there is so much emotion here, so much full-grown, that it must have taken a life, at least. Affirmed is a personal record—for Salsburg, surely, but for me too. I'm getting older, and my relationship to music now develops vertically rather than horizontally. I need something that has some stake to it, because I'm trying to find the light myself. We used to play for silver; now we play for life. Like that. So I'll damn right sing you every note on Tom T.'s Old Five and Dimers Like Me; but if art's not open—and that's the word I use to describe Affirmed: open—then what good is it to your soul? I'm talking about grown-up things here, things that set the bitch of this whole journey in relief: Barry Hannah's Ray, or Sammi Smith's version of "Saunder's Ferry Lane," or Duke Ellington's "Blue Indigo." I count Affirmed among these. Put another way: It's easy to write a song in a minor key and play it sad, but so much harder—though truer to life, I reckon—to play blue in a major key. In the last three years Nika Roza Danilova has gone from being an outsider experimental teenage noise-maker to a full fledged internationally celebrated electronic pop musician. It was a huge feat to accomplish, and despite her age (young), her geography (mid-western, desolate), her accelerated scholastic requirements (high school and college were completed in three years each) and her diminutive physical size (4”11, 90 lbs) she has triumphed. She has emerged as a figurehead—a self-produced, self-designed, self-taught independent woman. Zola Jesus is not a singer; she is a musician. Zola Jesus is not a band; it is a solo project. That is not to say the people who have helped her along the way were not deeply important. Her irreplaceable live band, who’s drummer Nick Johnson lends a hand on several tracks here, and her friend Brian Foote who co-produced this album in addition to the live string players (Sean McCann, Ryan York) who contribute here were all crucial in the process. Nika however, is a woman who can command a room, any room, without needing a band, a stage, or even a microphone. Her voice is unmistakable; it cuts right to the core. Conatus is a huge leap forward in production, instrumentation and song structure. It says it all in the definition of the title: the will to keep on, to move forward. From thumping ballads to electronic glitch, no sound goes unexplored on her new record. It is an icy exploration in refined chaos and controlled madness, an effort to break through capability and access a sonic world that crumbles as it shines. ALSO... Six Organs of Admittance is basically just one man (but what a man!) - Ben Chasny, along with whomever he ropes in for recording or for shows. This man-band started in 1997 when Ben self- released his first LP in an edition of 400, little dreaming that one day Six Organs of Admittance would sell 37 times as many records. It was just something that was destined to happen - but that was the beginning of the happening. Over the years, Six Organs of Admittance has had many releases on a variety of labels, most notably Holy Mountain. During this time, Six Organs of Admittance became one of the most infulential sounds in the free world. In 2005, Ben found a home at Drag City and released the landmark album, "School of the Flower". Free jazz ninja drum master Chris Corsano joined Ben and the results were a perfect blend of melody, out-folk, minimalism and noise, getting much critical applause and ending up on year-end best-of-the-year lists by magazines such as Mojo, Wire, and Magnet. In 2011 we have been graced with an incredible new record, "Asleep on the Floodplain"...Ten portable slabs of home recorded blur-and-ripple (and warble) from a (mostly) acoustic Six Organs. Earth returned in 2002 for a series of live shows in the U.S. and Europe, this time as a two-piece with Carlson and drummer Adrienne Davies. That lineup was featured on 2005's Living in the Gleam of an Unsheathed Sword. The album was recorded live, with its title cut lasting nearly an hour. Earth returned that September with the more ambitious Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method, which suggested the sound of a drone metal band covering Giant Sand or Scenic. Hibernaculum was released in 2008, which offered four long songs, three of which originally appeared on earlier recordings but were performed on this set via the new Earth sonic aesthetic. It also contained a DVD featuring concert and interview footage from theHex tour. The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull appeared in 2009, and took the latter-day Earth sound into even more hauntingly abstract and cinematic directions. In 2010, Southern Lord released A Bureaucratic Desire for Extra-Capsular Extraction, a remastered compilation containing the complete 1990 Smegma Studios sessions -- their earliest recordings -- that were previously only available separately on Extra-Capsular Extraction and Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars. Carlson resumed the experiments he began back on Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method with the first part of a projected trilogy entitled Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light, Vol. 1. It was also issued by Southern Lord in early 2011. ++++++ Phil Elverum is Mount Eerie. The 31 year-old multi-instrumentalist has played in other bands, and worked as a producer, but remains best known for this solo project, which began under the name the Microphones in 1997. In 2003, he renamed the project Mount Eerie (and added an “e” to his last name, Elvrum) after returning from a trip to Norway, where he lived alone in a remote cabin for a winter. “Mount Eerie” specifically refers to the mountain on Fidalgo Island, an island an hour and change north of Seattle where you’ll also find Elverum’s lifelong Anacortes, Washington hometown. To date, his most critically acclaimed (and popular) album is the Microphones’ 2001 epic The Glow Pt. 2. The first official Mount Eerie album—following the Microphones’ final 2003 full-length, also called Mount Eerie—is 2005’s No Flashlight: Songs of the Fulfilled Night. It was followed by 2007’s Mount Eerie pts. 6 & 7, a 132-page, hardcover book of his photography, packaged with a 10” picture disk. In early 2009, the journals he kept and drawings he scribbled in Norway were released as a 144-page hardcover book called Dawn. It came with 16 color photo cards and a CD of songs he wrote while living in the cabin. Regardless of the moniker, the various collections include interlocking themes, references to earlier works, and are marked by Elverum’s distinctive naturalist self-recorded lo-fi analog sound that mixes a whispered, gentle voice, which can also yell and bellow, with various strains of sound: His work can be delicately spare or booming and ambitiously layered and noisy, often in the same song. Lyrically, he focuses on memory, first-person storytelling, myth, naturalism, the everyday as sacred, and a sense of place (in and out of Washington State), among other related things. The modern musical unit known as Black Moth Super Rainbow first emerged from an obscure Pennsylvania forest glen in 2003 to relay a somewhat confounding sound with Falling Through a Field. Over the next few years, that peculiar sound developed, and the cult of BMSR began. With the release of their naturally-sweetened, candy-coated, and acclaimed 2007 treat, Dandelion Gum, a number of curious listeners bent their ears and adjusted their listening habits to incorporate Black Moth Super Rainbow’s oddly creepy and off-beat sweet audio plyings. With support slots opening for Flaming Lips and Aesop Rock, the oft-camera shy outfit was soon positioned in front of thousands of brand new sonically adventurous music enthusiasts who weren’t necessarily prepared for the eccentric visuals of BMSR’s surreal live show, but would hopefully emerge changed, and be better off for it. Their new full length presentation for 2009, Eating Us, promises to up the ante on the fidelity and melodies that BMSR have become known for. Here, the merry cryptic band has added some new flavors to their already well-established rainbow of sounds, with even more dense layers of lushly complex orchestration, intensely rhythmic drumming from a live, human drummer, vocoder vocals that are anything but robotic, and thick, undulating bass tones. Recorded at Tarbox Road Studios, Eating Us marks the first time BMSR has ventured into a modern recording studio. Production and partial tracking were handled by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT, Weezer) whose hands and ears were the only ones trusted to keep the freaked out wiggles and hairy candies fully in-tact, while also expanding them in a more realistic space. Some of them are young, fresh-faced and mischievous, weaving fairy tales of innocence and idealism. Others are ragged, weathered poets, whose hearts in contrast are comforted more by religious ballads and bittersweet songs of betrayal. Nevertheless they forge ahead together, singing as one, united, all part of the same parade. Since getting started out west, slumming it up north, working himself like a dog out east, making a go for it down south, doing his time overseas, and now living in the middle of the country where rock and roll was born, Cass McCombs has made a mysterious and mythological moniker. He writes songs for both the streets and the priests, the seers and the school children, friends and enemies, for suburban families and whatever's left of the ivory tower. As of late, besides recording and writing, he's been working on developing esoteric artistic models which aim to unite the arts in these times of "corruption and perversity"; also his wife just got a cat who he nicknamed "Hi-tone." Swarming guitar fuzz, bass waves, Jana Hunter's voice, and insistent drum throbs are the core components of Baltimore's Lower Dens. Hunter, sometimes known for intimate, ghost-heavy weird-fi, is now writing and playing with a group that might get filed as new wave, or drone pop, or post-punk. With due deference to her solo work, we're very glad. The swarming wave-throb, coupled with Hunter's lyrics and redolent, charred voice, wrecks. The band's first record, Twin-Hand Movement, is eleven perfect songs long. From opener "Blue & Silver" (anxiety mounts at a quick clip until the final climactic release) to "Plastic & Powder" (a churning, narcotic slow-burner) to "Hospice Gates" (penultimate album cut, proud weirdo anthem, possible creative zenith), not one is a space-taker. They're rife with the survivalist paranoia you'd expect from residents of a post-urban port hole (and this particular songwriter), crafted methodically and beautifully, and carry you enthusiastically out into the rolling breaks of industrial filth-water. **************************************************************************************  WOODS White Fence Naked Gods Tuesday, August 9th @ The Grey Eagle $10 Tickets available NOW @ Harvest, Orbit DVD, Static Age, Grey Eagle & online HERE. With a title like At Echo Lake, the fifth album from New York’s Woods intimates a modern rock aesthetic fully informed by historical manifestations of teenage along with a concomitant feel for the specifics of time and place. The distance between 2007’s At Rear House and 2010’s At Echo Lake may at first seem only semantic but it more properly represents a move from a kind of informal back porch jam ethos to a fully-committed vision of the infinite possibilities of group playing. Over the past few years Woods have established themselves as an anomaly in a world of freaks. They were an odd proposition even in the outré company of vocalist/guitarist/label owner Jeremy Earl’s Woodsist roster, perpetually out of time, committed to songsmanship in an age of noise, drone and improvisation, to extended soloing, oblique instrumentals and the usurping use of tapes and F/X in an age of dead-end singer-songwriters. Recent live shows have seen them best confuse the two, playing beautifully-constructed songs torn apart by fuzztone jams and odd electronics. At Echo Lake feels like a diamond-sharp distillation of the turbulent power of their live shows, in much the same way that The Grateful Dead’s “Dark Star” single amplified and engulfed the planetary aspect of their improvised takes. Some of the material here – the opening “Blood Dries Darker”, the euphoric “Mornin’ Time” – is so lush that lesser brains would’ve succumbed to the appeal of strings and horns but At Echo Lake is more Fifth Dimension than Notorious Byrd Brothers, nowhere more so than on “From The Horn”, a track that is as beautiful in its assault on form as “Eight Miles High” or Swell Maps’ “Midget Submarines”. But despite the instrumental innovation that the album heralds – G. Lucas Cranes’ psychedelic tapework on “Suffering Season”, guest musician Matthew Valentine’s harmonica and modified banjo/sitar on “Time Fading Lines” – At Echo Lake is all about the vocals. Woods’ secret weapon is the quality of Earl’s voice, osmosing the naive style of Jad Fair, Jonathan Richman and Neil Young while re-thinking it as a discipline and a tradition. Here he is singing at the peak of his powers, in a high soulful style that is bolstered by heavenly arrangements of backing vocals. At Echo Lake feels like the transmission point for teenage garage from the past to the future. Six Organs of Admittance is basically just one man (but what a man!) - Ben Chasny, along with whomever he ropes in for recording or for shows. This man-band started in 1997 when Ben self- released his first LP in an edition of 400, little dreaming that one day Six Organs of Admittance would sell 37 times as many records. It was just something that was destined to happen - but that was the beginning of the happening. Over the years, Six Organs of Admittance has had many releases on a variety of labels, most notably Holy Mountain. During this time, Six Organs of Admittance became one of the most infulential sounds in the free world. In 2005, Ben found a home at Drag City and released the landmark album, "School of the Flower". Free jazz ninja drum master Chris Corsano joined Ben and the results were a perfect blend of melody, out-folk, minimalism and noise, getting much critical applause and ending up on year-end best-of-the-year lists by magazines such as Mojo, Wire, and Magnet. The modern musical unit known as Black Moth Super Rainbow first emerged from an obscure Pennsylvania forest glen in 2003 to relay a somewhat confounding sound with Falling Through a Field. Over the next few years, that peculiar sound developed, and the cult of BMSR began. With the release of their naturally-sweetened, candy-coated, and acclaimed 2007 treat, Dandelion Gum, a number of curious listeners bent their ears and adjusted their listening habits to incorporate Black Moth Super Rainbow’s oddly creepy and off-beat sweet audio plyings. With support slots opening for Flaming Lips and Aesop Rock, the oft-camera shy outfit was soon positioned in front of thousands of brand new sonically adventurous music enthusiasts who weren’t necessarily prepared for the eccentric visuals of BMSR’s surreal live show, but would hopefully emerge changed, and be better off for it. Their new full length presentation for 2009, Eating Us, promises to up the ante on the fidelity and melodies that BMSR have become known for. Here, the merry cryptic band has added some new flavors to their already well-established rainbow of sounds, with even more dense layers of lushly complex orchestration, intensely rhythmic drumming from a live, human drummer, vocoder vocals that are anything but robotic, and thick, undulating bass tones. Recorded at Tarbox Road Studios, Eating Us marks the first time BMSR has ventured into a modern recording studio. Production and partial tracking were handled by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT, Weezer) whose hands and ears were the only ones trusted to keep the freaked out wiggles and hairy candies fully in-tact, while also expanding them in a more realistic space. In addition he has contributed to albums by artists as diverse as Charlie Louvin, Candi Staton, and Wooden Wand, as well as taking part in a large ensemble piece by composer Rhys Chatham. He also recently contributed a track to Tompkins Square's acoustic guitar compilation, 'Imaginational Anthem v 4 : New Possibilities.'... 'Behold The Spirit' reveals an astounding array of talents. In addition to his beautiful playing, Tyler is also an ace arranger, augmenting complex textures and various instrumentation alongside his lyrical compositions. A stunning, beautiful and varied guitar album for the ages. Not to be confused to Baltimore stoner-folks, Arbouretum, Arborea is a Maine-based minimalist folk duo whom I wouldn’t mind adding to a mix that includes folks like Marissa Nadler, Sandy Denny and White Chalk-period P.J. Harvey. Careless Love was recorded to promote their recent U.K. tour, and while its beautiful sparseness may not resonate with you in these last days of summer, I recommend you make like the squirrel and stash this one away for February when it’s going to sound mighty nice with along with a little something in a brandy snifter. They attended the University of Evansville then moved to Silverlake, California in 1997, where they were founding members of and backup singers for local band Slydell. They also began writing their own music and performing with other musicians. In 2006 the Watson Twins released their debut EP, Southern Manners, almost simultaneously with Rabbit Fur Coat, their collaboration with singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis. Their album Fire Songs was released on June 24, 2008 and on February 9th, 2010 they released "Talking To You, Talking To Me" both on Vanguard Records. The group recorded a version of the Neil Young song "Powderfinger" for the American Laundromat Records compilation charity album titled Cinnamon Girl - Women Artists Cover Neil Young for Charity, released in February 2008. ANYWAYS We figured it was time for another contest! SO...
WE'RE ASKING YOU TO DESIGN OUR NEW OUTDOOR SIGN!
Here's the details:
If we choose your design.. you will not only have thousands upon thousands of Haywood Road drivers, bikers & pedestrians marvel at its beauty for years to come, but you will receive $100 in store credit to be used anytime!
The deadline to submit a design is MONDAY, JANUARY 24th at NOON. No submissions will be accepted after that date.
Feel free to submit as many ideas as you have.
Please email your design in .pdf format.
There are 3 REQUIREMENTS:
#1: The sign will end up being roughly 2ft tall x 16ft long. Please keep your idea with that same ratio -- 1:8. The 1 being vertical, and the 8 being horizontal. If this doesn't make sense, just ask us to clarify.
#2: The only actual words in your design should be "HARVEST" and "RECORDS". Nothing else.
#3: No LP/vinyl/record images please! For instance, don't make the "O" in "RECORDS" look like an actual LP.

#1: WE DO SPECIAL ORDERS. LOTS OF THEM. If something is in print and in stock at one of our many distributors, we will order it for you at no extra cost. We will literally be making overnight orders EVERY SINGLE DAY before Christmas Eve. So please, don't hesitate to ask!
#2: WE WILL MAIL STUFF ANYWHERE. If you live out of town and can't find goodies at your local record store, or just want to forward this to your mom in Kansas City, or whatever. Just tell your loved ones to call us (828.258.2999) and we will figure it out, or you can give us a shout over email. Make a list and send it to family members. We have exceptional phone manners.
#3: HOLIDAY HOURS: For your convenience, we'll add an hour of morning shopping time next week.
